Autism Society of Pakistan

Autism Society of Pakistan (ASP) was registered as a non-profit National umbrella organisation in 2010, under The Societies Act, 1860. In line with the new Government policy, ASP was re-registered under the Islamabad Capital Territory Charities Registration, Regulation and Fecilitation Act 2021. The primary objective of ASP is to work for the children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and also includes advocacy, fund raising, training and research. The first Autism Resource Centre (ARC) is functioning at Rawalpindi since Sep 2010. Encouraged by the success, and consistent with the mandate of replicating resource centres, another setup at Islamabad was added in 2016.

What is Autism?

Autism is a complex neuro-developmental disorder that is usually detected in children from 18 months to three years of age. It affects the child’s communication, socialization and cognition. If the children with autism receive early intervention they improve remarkably well and many of them may go to the mainstream schools. There are no reliable data for the prevalence of autism in Pakistan. In the US population autism is seen in about one in sixty nine children and its incidence is gradually increasing. The statistics from South Asia estimate that there may be 350,000 children with autism in Pakistan. Unfortunately most of these children remain undiagnosed due to the lack of awareness and expertise in diagnosis. The parents often suffer silently and perhaps more unfortunate are the affected children who have to bear the brunt of the disorder and being mishandled.
